Providence RI for pastries?

Yeah, I do silly things, and this is no exception. I was trying to think of something to get my wife for the Holidays that she would NOT expect, and I figured it out.

Sometime back we (my wife and I) snuck away to Providence, RI for a few days, and while down their she had some cannoli she said were the best she had ever had. Well I woke up on the 22nd of December and said “That’s it”, “she’ll never expect to get some of those wonderful cannoli as a christmas gift, and so, off I went.

Now it’s about a 3 hour drive one way, which isn’t a big deal for someone who loves to drive (heck my grandson and I have gone to NY for lunch before), and the drive was clear sailing, not much traffic down or back.

Now that’s not to say, I didn’t have a surprise or 2 waiting for me.

1st surprise, there was a line out the door when I got there (11 ish)

2nd surprise, people in line were saying things like “Glad I called ahead” ‘I didn’t know they were only taking reservations this time of year” (no, I didn’t call ahead:( )

3rd surprise (a bit nicer surprise), someone in front was telling the peron near them, that they called earlier, and she was told, we’ll have stuff, I just can’t tell you what, but your more then welcome to come on down and see what is left”

Oh, did I mention the name of the place yet, Scialo Bros Bakery

Ok, so the long / short of it is this. I finally got inside, told them how far a came, they took care of me (2 dozen cannolis) and a dozen or so, specialty pastries and I was back on my way home (well that and $155.00 less in my pocket:( ), but I surprised and happy wife (I hope) soon.

Before I left town, on my way back to my car, I passed a nice Italian grocery store, that made ALL there meats on site, well all the ones they are known for. I went in, took my number, walked around and pickup some neat pastas, vintage / aged balsamic vinegar and stuff, but never no meats:( I was in line for 30 minutes (time flies when you talking with folks around you). After awhile I did ask if I was in the right line, and what number they were on? I was number 54, and they were on number 79!! That’s right, I had been in line 30 + – minutes, and they were on #79. I figured it was going to be at least another 30 to 45 minutes, so I went and paid for what I had and hit the road.

She was very happy. She said she was surprised that they would ship these and that they must make and ship the same day (oh did I mention, I laid them out on a BIG platter and gave them to her that night). I did this because I didn’t know or expect them to be as good in 3 days.

The pastries were awesome, and heck, I’ll be going back in a few weeks with my daughter and grandson, and then I’ll get some of their world renown meats then.
